About Conserved Land

The Atlantic Coast Conservancy Connection

The PMBG is protected in perpetuity by a deed of conservation easement held by the Atlantic Coast Conservancy (ACC) whose mission is "to provide 21st century solutions and sound scientific applications for conservation of critical natural resources in the face of a changing climate focusing on the Southeastern United States with specific utilization of geographic information systems applications in land conservation, ecosystem services, carbon sequestration and conservation biology."Potts Mountain Burial Ground is a project of the Atlantic Coast Conservancy, a community based non-profit (CBO) land trust whose mission is “to provide 21st Century solutions and sound scientific applications for conservation of critical natural resources in the face of a changing climate focusing on the Southeastern U.S. with specific utilization of geographic information systems applications in land conservation, ecosystems services, carbon sequestration and conservation biology.”

To date, the Jasper, Georgia-based Atlantic Coast Conservancy (ACC) has successfully conserved over one hundred thousand acres across the Southeastern U.S. through conservation easements and fee simple donation. A conservation easement is a legal encumbrance — sometimes including a transfer of usage rights — which creates an enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and a qualified land protection organization like ACC (often called a “land trust”), or a government agency (municipality, county, state, federal), for the purposes of conservation. It restricts real estate development, commercial and industrial uses, and certain other activities on a property to a mutually agreed upon level. Protected in Perpetuity

The 1,378 acres of Potts Mountain is protected by a conservation easement in perpetuity. However, in an effort to illustrate the many Ecosystem Services available to landowners with protected property, Robert D. Keller, Ph.D., the ACC’s Chief Executive Officer, has launched several service projects designed to enhance the ecological value of the land, and bring jobs and economic benefits to Jasper and Pickens County – of which the Potts Mountain Burial Ground is one.

Ecosystem services are outputs, conditions, or processes of natural systems that directly or indirectly benefit people and society. There are four main categories: provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services. Robert D. Keller, Ph.D., the ACC’s Chief Executive Officer, plans to launch several ecosystem service projects designed to enhance the ecological value of the land, and bring jobs and economic benefits to Jasper and Pickens County.
